There was no moon there, nor the moonlit sky, so fire is a good candidate for an accident.

Yes, a fire is a likely fire, but I think most people would agree it’s a good candidate for a simple accident in the night sky. As Malone points out, the moon is a much better candidate. A moonlit sky doesn’t mean a huge fire has lit up the sky. The difference between an accident and a fire is the amount of illumination that surrounds it. An accident could happen at any time in the night, while a fire may only happen at night.

Malone makes a good point. The moon is a much better candidate for an accident than the sun is because it is more likely to shine directly at the area at which we are looking. The moon is also brighter, which can make it easier to spot if things are starting to burn.
